Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in the UK has achieved a major milestone by being the first in the world to use an AI system for quick skin cancer checks. Doctors are using a smartphone app called ‘Derm’ to take pictures of suspicious moles.
The AI looks at these pictures in just a few seconds. With this new tool, nearly half of the patients get immediate results showing they are free of cancer. This cuts down on waiting times and lets specialists concentrate on more serious cases.
The AI tool is highly accurate, with a 99.9% success rate in confirming there is no melanoma. So far, 20 NHS hospitals have started using this tool, and it has helped identify over 13,000 cancer cases.
